Have you ever been sick and had a doctor say, “Let me see your tongue”?
This isn’t random. In TCM, your tongue is like a mirror. It reflects what’s happening inside your body.
Why the tongue? Because your tongue connects to many parts of your body. And more importantly, your tongue doesn’t have skin covering it. You can see its color, shape, and coating with your own eyes. You can’t see your liver or kidneys. But your tongue is right there.
TCM looks at three main things on your tongue:
Color. A healthy tongue is light red with a thin white coating. If your tongue is very red or even purple, your body has “heat.” If your tongue is pale white with little color, that means “cold” or “deficiency.”
Coating. The white stuff on your tongue is called the coating. A healthy coating is thin — you can still see the red underneath. If the coating is thick and covers the whole tongue, your digestion might not be working well, or there’s “dampness” in your body. If the coating is yellow, there’s heat. If it’s black, that’s a stronger warning sign.
Shape. Are there teeth marks on the sides of your tongue? Teeth marks mean “qi deficiency.” Is your tongue dry? Dryness means you need water or there’s heat. Is your tongue swollen? Swelling can mean spleen issues.
You can walk to a mirror right now and look at your tongue. Is it normal? If color, coating, and shape all look healthy — good for you. If something looks off, that’s not bad news either. It’s just a reminder: time to make some adjustments.
Your tongue doesn’t lie. Whether you’re eating well, sleeping enough, or having problems inside — it will tell you. You just need to learn to see it.
